How a facelift works: principles & advantages

Core principles (applies to both the traditional full facelift and the short-scar lift)

The medical name is facial soft-tissue rhytidectomy and lift. The core logic is not "pulling the skin tight" — it is multi-layer repositioning, healing in the new position, and long-lasting fixation.

1. Layered release

Precise dissection in the subcutaneous plane, the SMAS fascia layer, and the deep ligament spaces releases facial soft tissue that has slackened, sagged, and migrated — resolving fascial adhesions, gravity-driven accumulation, and folded-in lines.

2. SMAS fascia lift (the real core)

All of the lasting anti-aging effect comes from suspending and tightening the fascia layer. Skin is only the covering; the root cause of sagging is a lax fascia layer that has lost elasticity and support. The surgery lifts the SMAS upward and backward, folds and suture-fixes it, rebuilding the face's supporting structure.

3. Moderate excision of surplus skin

Once the fascia is fixed in place, the loose surface skin naturally flattens; only genuinely redundant skin is then removed and closed tension-free. (Tension-free = no tightness, no mask-face, no distortion, no wide scars.)

4. Healing in the new position drives long-lasting collagen

Released tissue re-adheres and heals in its new position, generating substantial new collagen and fibrotic fixation. This is why a facelift lasts the longest of all anti-aging procedures — 8–15 years.

Core advantages in summary

  1. The only procedure that addresses true sagging and fascia laxity
  2. The longest-lasting result — "structural" anti-aging
  3. Jawline and midface improvements that devices cannot replicate
  4. The thinner and looser the skin, the more natural and elegant the result

Common misconceptions, corrected

  1. It is not skin-cutting-and-pulling — it is fascia repositioning and lifting
  2. It does not get looser with each lift (proper layered surgery rebuilds support)
  3. It does not create a tight mask-face (proper tension-free closure looks naturally firm)
  4. It is not only for older patients — early laxity at 35+ gives the most refined results
